Israel's Minister of Environmental Protection MK Gilad Erdan and Israel's Minister of Education MK Gideon Sa'ar awarded financial prizes and certificates to kindergartens and schools which excel in environmental education, to high schools which initiate environmental projects and to students for outstanding research projects on environmental issues. The ceremony took place on June 21, 2010, just a week following the certification of new colleges as "Green Campuses" and following the establishment of a "Green Campus Forum". Environmental Protection Minister Erdan: "I attach major importance to the ability of the educational system to influence the general public by instilling environmental values in the younger generation. Education for environmental protection is quality education which connects the younger generation to the environment in which it lives and leads youth to think and act on behalf of the future." Environmental Protection Minister Gideon Sa'ar: "Environmental and social considerations should play a central role in decision making. The right way to instill environmental values is through education from early childhood and by encouraging responsibility taking and social involvement. Social change can only take place by means of education and students serve as the major significant catalyst for change. Our commitment to a sustainable lifestyle which takes account of environmental protection and the wise use of natural resources is a commitment to the present generation and to future generations." The prize ceremony is part of a comprehensive program spearheaded by the Education and Environmental Protection Ministries to integrate education for sustainability in the educational system and to transform environmental subjects into an integral part of both the curriculum and way of life in the school. The joint program includes: training of school and kindergarten teachers, development and assimilation of school plans on sustainability, training of youth movement leaders, production of study materials, and other activities.
